How to Fix EA 227: Safe Checks You Can Do
Step 1: Check Your Gas Supply
Try another gas appliance, such as the hob. A working hob suggests gas is reaching the property, but it doesn’t confirm there is enough pressure at the boiler. If it also struggles or won’t light, the problem is more likely the gas supply or meter than the boiler, so contact your gas supplier. If you have a prepay meter, check your credit and that the meter is active.
Step 2: Check the Condensate Pipe
In cold weather, look at the external condensate pipe, which usually runs from the boiler to a drain outside. Only check the part you can reach safely from the ground. If you see ice, especially at bends or the outlet, thaw it gently with warm water poured over the pipe, or hold a warm cloth against it. Never use boiling water, because it can damage the plastic. If the fault stays, leave the condensate trap inside the boiler to an engineer.
Step 3: Reset the Boiler Once
Press the reset button or use the reset option on the display, then let the start-up cycle finish. If the code comes back, stop resetting. Repeated resets can hide the underlying fault and won’t make a failing component work.
